This article examines the relationship between memory and identity in Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutics. It is based on a comparative analysis of Los rubios (2003) by Albertina Carri and Ainda estou aqui (2015) by Marcelo Rubens Paiva. These two works are linked to state terrorism in Argentina and Brazil. Starting from the notion of the capable man, the article addresses memory from the perspective of incapacity. The analysis reveals that in Carri’s work, the threat to identity is not due to mnemonic incapacity, but rather, the inability to convey its emotional aspect. Paiva’s work refers to an incapable person: his mother, Eunice, whose memory has been affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Nevertheless, her identity persists through practical dispositions and incorporated affective attitudes. These cases allow us to identify a form of affective habit-memory that Ricoeur recognized but marginalized due to its association with abuses of commemoration. The article argues that this association is unnecessary, as memory politics rest on affective habits that guide a society’s relationship with its past, whether or not they are narrated or commemorated
