A questão da essência e da existência de Deus segundo Tomás de Aquino

The article deals with the notions of “essence” and “existence” along the lines of Thomas Aquinas' opuscule The Being and the Essence (De ente et essentia). Taking as its starting point the thesis of the inseparability of these two notions with regard to God (ens per se), it first discusses how “essence” and “existence” are conformed in the context of beings in general (composite substances), that is, individualized through matter (designated) and form. Next, the unlimited character of the divine attributes is addressed, especially the notion of divine perseity (a nature such that it is the cause of itself). In short, this argumentative path aims to highlight the fundamental and causal character of God in the face of determinations concerning the order of beings in general.
