EFFECTS OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE BAIXO IGUAÇU HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANT ON THE FORMAL LABOR MARKET IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF CAPANEMA-PR
Abstract
This study sought to identify whether there was a change in the dynamics of variables related to the formal labor market in the municipality of Capanema-PR, Paraná, from 2010 to 2020, as it encompasses the phases before, during, and immediately after the construction of the hydroelectric plant in the municipality. To this end, data on formal employment relationships made available by the Annual Social Information Report (RAIS) were used, to which a descriptive and exploratory analysis was applied. An increase in the number of establishments with active formal jobs and in employment relationships was observed, highlighting agricultural activities, industry in general; transportation, storage, and mail; and public administration, defense, social security, education, human health, and social services. An increase in the range of monthly salaries of between 2 and 4 minimum wages was also observed. However, a substantial increase in the number of illiterate workers was detected during and after the construction of the plant. Thus, although some variables illustrating formal work in the municipality were impacted by the construction of the Baixo Iguaçu Plant, indicating a positive dynamism in its labor market during the period, in general, it cannot be stated that these effects denote that the municipality of Capanema became more developed after the project, since this requires a broad improvement in the population's living conditions and that the effects are long-lasting.
