Abstract

The use of herbal medicines stems from empirical knowledge, passed down through generations, with some populations actively preserving this practice. In this context, this study aimed to understand and characterize the forms of use and knowledge about herbal medicines among rural populations residing in Land Reform settlements in the State of Santa Catarina. Data collection took place from May to June 2024, involving 14 participants, all from settlement areas. Data were collected via a questionnaire developed using Microsoft Forms and distributed through digital media (WhatsApp or email). The responses highlight that the majority of respondents were women (92.9%), who learned to use plants for care from their mothers and grandmothers (42.9%). Regarding the most frequently used plants, mint (42.9%), chamomile, and rosemary (both 35.7%) predominated. This research recognized the use of herbal medicines as a practice for sustaining life in agrarian reform territories.
