Multidimensional Index of Sustainable Development: an estimate for the municipalities of the State of Paraná

The State of Paraná is included in the OECD's (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) project for territorialization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aiming to expand the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, according to the 2030 Agenda. Is it possible to use an alternative method to identify and quantify Sustainable Development Indicators? Therefore, the objectives of this study were to identify the variables and develop multidimensional indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the State of Paraná and its 399 municipalities. Multivariate factor analysis was used to generate the multidimensional index. Factor analysis and machine learning techniques reveal that the variables are associated; therefore, multidimensionality should be considered in the modeling. To establish synthetic regions, grouping municipalities with greater similarity (or lesser distance) in relation to the integrated indices, cluster analysis was used. The grouping of variables using canonical functions generated an accuracy of 99.7%. Regardless of the technique employed in the analysis of the variables, a correlation or association between them will always be observed through the multidimensionality that occurs between them. The corrections revealed the integrality of sustainability among the economic, social, and environmental variables, and they are interconnected through the multidimensional index of the municipalities. This index allows us to identify the 5 groups of municipalities, the variables that determine the discrimination of the municipalities, and their ranking.
