Abstract

The aim of the paper is to explore the historical and socially situated nature ofbiomedical monopoly. We focus on how this monopoly is questioned from different expressionsrelated to civil society. In order to do this, the paper stresses a series of relationshipsbetween three social agents that make the construction of the formal health system in thecountry: 1) the State, 2) the official medicine, constituted in a corporation (FREIDSON, 1970)capable of influencing government decisions and policies and 3) the social actors at themargins of healing social space, which represent a potential threat vis-à-vis the monopoly ofofficial medicine. To systematize these networks, the article has two sections. First, wepresent a historical context, seeking to show how it delineates a transformation regardingthe attitude of the state on medical approaches. Second, we analyze the horizon of possibilityof transforming the health field in Argentina today.
