Abstract

During the First World Festival of Negro Arts took place in April 1966, in Dakar (Senegal), a group of African filmmakers and audiovisual technicians discussed the challenges of independent African cinema. This independence was not only in technical and economic terms, but also in cultural terms. The aim was to “decolonize” the new African film production. Almost 60 years after the event in the Senegalese capital, an analysis of documents in the archives of the Musée du quai Branly in Paris and the collections of the Black Film Center & Archive at Indiana University in Bloomington sheds light on some of the dilemmas of the early days of African cinema of post-independence Era.
