This work aims to understand the mode of constitution of the effects of meaning produced by material things from the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper and its reverberations in the digital world. It is based on the assumption that journalistic media functions as an ideological instrument, and therefore cannot fulfill its ideal of impartiality, since opacity is constitutive of language itself, just as ideology is constitutive of every discourse. In this sense, the research highlighted how ideology interpellates everyone, though not in the same way, as it constitutes distinct – even antagonistic – affiliations. The analytical corpus of this study comprises a social media post featuring a special front page commemorating the milestone of 500,000 deaths caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the comments on that post. Regarding the theoretical and methodological framework, the study draws on the principles of Materialist Discourse Analysis, mainly the works of Pêcheux (1997a, 1997b, 2011, 2014), Orlandi (2005, 2007, 2022), and Indursky (2011). It was observed that the post produced different effects of meaning, with one group taking it as a question in its literal sense, without detaching themselves from the political aspect present in the language; while another group saw it as a political arena of affections and animosities through a polarized reading.
