This article presents an interdisciplinary pedagogical proposal developed in sixth-grade classes in elementary school, addressing the names of Brazilian islands, their meanings, and their importance for environmental preservation. The proposal shows how the study of Toponomastics and Literature, linked to environmental education, promotes awareness, critical thinking, and cultural appreciation among students. The relevance of the work lies in the integration of linguistic, geographical, and socio-environmental knowledge, in line with the BNCC (National Common Core Curriculum) and Sustainable Development Goal 14, Life Below Water. The main objective of the article is to relate the names of the islands and their legends to reflection on cultural identity and the preservation of marine and coastal ecosystems. Methodologically, the experience involves reading legends, collective discussion, analysis of environmental posters, and production of awareness posters. The results reveal that students understood the symbolic and cultural importance of the islands, recognized the need for environmental preservation, and developed attitudes of responsibility and social protagonism. The results show that the onomastics approach, when combined with the study of legends and folk tales and the creation of awareness-raising posters, facilitates meaningful learning, fostering cultural awareness and environmental engagement.
