Analyzing the learning demands for Spanish at the Language Center of the Languages without Borders

Low proficiency in foreign languages has emerged as one of the main challenges to be overcome in the internationalization process of Brazilian higher education institutions (HEIs). The Languages without Borders program (currently the Andifes IsF Network) aims to overcome this challenge, becoming a nationally recognized language policy. Every year, the Language Centers offer courses aimed at expanding the linguistic competence of their own and other academic communities. Based on this, this work aims to analyze the Spanish language learning demands based on enrollments in courses offered locally by the Languages without Borders Language Center at the State University of Feira de Santana (NucLi-IsF/UEFS) between 2022 and 2025. The data were extracted from the registration forms and organized, for quantitative and interpretative analysis, into four variables. This research was based on studies on language policies for the internationalization of higher education institutions, especially the IsF (Abreu-e-Lima et al., 2021; Beckhauser; Oliveira, 2023). The data confirm, that over the years, there has been an increase in the demand for Spanish language learning, led by undergraduate students. We believe that this scenario is a result of the mobility programs offered by the university in question. Interestingly, among the students who most frequently enrolled in the courses, the majority were from the Languages and Literature programs: Portuguese and Spanish, which leads us to believe that the focus is not on improving proficiency for internationalization, but on developing professional competence (Busnardi; Fernandes, 2011).
