Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between weight training and the competitive performance of male judo athletes from Paraná. The sample consisted of 40 athletes, divided into two groups: 20 practicing weight training and 20 not practicing it. Data were collected during the Paraná State Championships and the Open Games of Paraná between 1994 and 1997. Questionnaires were applied, and results from official competitions were analyzed. The study revealed that judokas who practiced weight training achieved better competitive results compared to non-practitioners. The findings suggest that weight training positively influences athletic performance, particularly when balanced with judo-specific training sessions.
