Abstract

The practice of physical activity performed by elderly has been increasing significantly and has been highlighted due to the general benefits provided during aging. Therefore, the aim of this study is to present, through a literature review, the benefits that the regular practice of physical activity may provide for people during aging. It was found that the main benefits of regular physical activity practice for elderly are related to: disease prevention; maintenance or improvement of functional and physical capacities; improved physical fitness levels; body weight control assistance; to help in the development and maintenance of healthy bones, muscles and joints; maintenance of muscle strength and balance, giving them mobility and reducing the falls; better socialization; psychological well-being and self-esteem, and others of subjective order. Moreover, many elderly find in physical activity a new motivation to live, once that aging is also seen as a period of development, challenges and possibilities.
