Abstract

The cardiorespiratory endurance has been considered one of the most important components of physical fitness and the maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) one their most used indexes. The purpose of this study was to verify the construct validity of the maximal multistage 20m shuttle run test from LEGER et al. (1988) as an indicator of the VO2max to males students from 13 to 14 years old. The sample was composed by 15 students matured as self-evaluation (TANNER, 1962). Were collected growth variables (body height and body mass) and body composition variables (triceps and subscapular skinfold) and then calculated the percentage of fat (LOHMAN, 1986). To measure the directly way of VO2max was used a VO2000 ergospirometry device and treadmill. The SPSS program for Windows - 11.0 version was utilized to run date tabulation and statistical analysis. The associations between variables of cardiorrespiratory fitness were made by Pearson linear correlation (r) and comparison of means by Student “t” test for independent samples. The results suggest a highly significant correlation (r=0.78, p<0.01) in the sample, showing a correlation of high significance in the age of 13 years (r=0.72, p<0.05) and 14 years (r=0.83, p<0.05). It was concluded that maximal multistage 20m shuttle run test presented an acceptable construct validity to males students from 13 to 14 years old.
