THE CULTURAL ADAPTATION OF BRAZILIAN EXPATRIATES: AN ANALYSIS OF ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND CORPORATE ASPECTS

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the economic, social and corporate aspects that influence the cultural adjustment of Brazilian expatriates. To attend the objective, we interviewed two organizational expatriates’ and seven volunteers. The script that guided the interviews was elaborated from Gialain (2009) and Barbosa (2010). For analysis, data were grouped into categories. The results show that both expatriates declare that financial factor was the most important in the decision of expatriation. Still, most respondents indicated expatriation as part of their career-planning while required constant adaptation to different aspects of the destination country. Finally, the organizational expatriates indicated that aspects such as relationships with new colleagues and workload not difficult the adaption in destination country. Respondents were unanimous in stating that family support was essential in the expatriation decision.
