Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the concept of social fact developed by Emile Durkheim. Our primary goal is to understand how the French sociologist sought to safeguard this concept of the numerous criticisms that even in his time, were addressed to it. Therefore, we have come not only the principal objections, but also the arguments used by the author in order to defend these attacks. The method is highly revisionist, analytical and bibliographic. Indeed, we try to demonstrate that, despite the weaknesses detected, that concept represented an attempt to define the object of sociology, marking a position in relation to other areas of knowledge, especially Philosophy, Biology and Psychology.
