Abstract

This article intends to analyze the meaning of education in Emile Durkheim and Max Weber, aiming to trace the differences and possible similarities between them. Given that these are two icons of classical sociology, this text aims to understand the treatment they accorded to educational phenomenon, highlighting the role played by the education system in their respective works from his most significant works. Although sustaining very different positions on the subject, the authors lay the foundations of a sociology of education that aims to overcome the major dilemmas engendered by the advance of industrialization, noting, in effect, the expansion of civil rights and democratic values.
