Deteriorating terms of trade between agricultural and manufactured products
an empirical analysis of soybean and combine harvester prices in Brazil

The aim of this study is to investigate the Singer-Prebisch hypothesis, a widely debated economic question about the behavior of the prices of primary and manufactured products over time. By analyzing the time series of soybean prices (primary product) and combine harvester prices (manufactured product), the Holt-Winters exponential smoothing model and other econometric techniques were used to verify whether combine harvester prices tend to grow more than soybean prices. The results point to a significant agreement with the hypothesis of the Singer-Prebisch thesis. The Holt-Winters model proved to be suitable for capturing the trends and behavior of time series, providing accurate and reliable forecasts. Harvester prices were found to have a more pronounced upward trend compared to soybean prices over time. Analysis of the growth trend of the difference between the logarithm series also strengthened the conclusions, indicating that the disparity between combine harvester and soybean prices is growing over time. These results contribute to the understanding of the economic dynamics of the agricultural sector, providing relevant insights for producers, investors and policymakers.
