Abstract

Despite extensive lack of acknowledgement from the literary critics of his time towards his work, Erico Verissimo was undoubtedly one of the great writers of Brazilian modernism. The article presents some of his main contributions to the development of Brazilian narrative, such as the introduction of the contrapuntal narration technique. Used initially in Clarissa and Caminhos cruzados, this narrative feature revolutionized the modernist urban novel. Furthermore, the innovative, metafictional narrative structure set in two historical times he used to elaborate the trilogy O tempo e o vento was, according to Flávio Loureiro Chaves (2001), a monumental piece of work and the formal resolution of the Brazilian historical novel.
