Abstract

Images of a boy are presented in José Lins do Rego’s literary regionalist world in Menino de Engenho (1997). This boy is remembered by an adult full of melancholic remembrances which were experienced under the sign of solitude. One feels boy’s fatigued look in touch with the decadent universe of the engenho, a ruined scenery which engenders the self-constitution of boy Carlinhos. One departs from readings of the scholar Maurício Gomes de Almeida (1981) who discusses about Lins do Rego’s memorial writing, and from statements of Susan Sontag (1980) about the image of the melancholic being in a memory vivified by sorrow and nostalgia.
