Abstract

This essay explores some ideas offered by the Brazilian popular music repertoire to analyze about the place of the melancholy in the Brazilin culture. If a specific historical thinking, related to Modernism, established the humor as the central characteristic of Brazilian identity, some songs help us to think about the way as the opposite, the melancholy, is imagined. Furthermore, it’s also possible to think about the place of this melancholy in other powerful representation of Brazilian Modernism: that sees the Brazilian culture as a space of “cordiality”.
