Abstract

The article discusses the approach of the Brazilian media on the migration of Haitians towards Brazil and, more specifically, to the state of Rio Grande do Sul in the contemporaneity, focusing on the meanings attributed to the individual immigrant and borders in the construction of this migratory process. Analysing news in the recent time frame between 2010 and 2015, in a scope that comprises printed media of all kinds and ideologies, the results found two ways of approach: one traditional and one that tends to a decolonial perspective, this one constituted with a sensationalist approach or an assistentialist/solidarist one. These approaches allowed the inference of different perceptions and agencies given to the Haitian immigrant and borders by the State in a mediatic scope of multiple similarities, despite the existing ideological pluralisms.
