Abstract

Historically, in Rio de la Plata’s región, different discourses have emphasized theexistence of a shared cultural and musical heritage among uruguaians and argentinians. Fromthis point of view, historical and cultural continuities between the two countries speak louderthan the international border. Intensified migration flows since the 1970’s, especially in theUruguai-Argentina direction, may have helped in the articulation of a sense o regionality thattranscends borders. As a part of this tendency we may observe the increasing appropriationof uruguaian genres by argentinian musicians and audiences. These practices, however, appear side by side with their counterpart, where national differences are reinforced. Revisitinganthropological discussions about borders and social categories, this essay examinesthe relationships between musical practices and the ways in which regional continuity andnational differences are performed.
