Abstract

This paper focuses on the Miwa Association, a sokyoku (koto music) group in SãoPaulo. Miwa Miyoshi founded the one of the first Brazilian associations of Japanese “classical”music. Following a synthesis of the historical background, some aspects of maintenance andcultural adaptation will be presented, constructed and based on a personal archive, mainly ofthe teacher and heiress, Miriam Sumie Saito. The Miwa-kai, as its own name infers, presentsa more unique behavior than the other sôkyoku groups in the same city due its solidarityprevailing on the musical ones.
