Abstract

Toponyms are an important indication of the identity of a specific social group. This paper analyses linguistic, historical and cultural aspects in search of motivational elements for the names of the thirteen cities of the western frontier of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, a territory characterized by disputes between Portuguese and Spanish explorers and settlers and their relationship with the native indians. Theoretical contributions given by Andrade e Dick (2012), Biderman (2001), Dick (1990), Isquerdo (1997; 2012) will be useful for this analysis, and data are classified according to Dick’s (1990) taxionomic model.
