Abstract

The aim of this work is to analyze images of homosexuality in the novel Maurice (1913/1971), by E. M. Forster. Such representation employs references to Hellenism and to a high amount of sentimentality for expressing affects.  Through references to Hellenic world, the novel disclosures a criticism on English appropriation of classic ideals, specifically that concerning intellect. In Maurice, intellectual experience when isolated from love experience (emotional, sensual) appears as a typical trait of a context in which homophobia served for maintaining class privilege.
