Abstract

Based on Jacques Lacan's discussion upon the work of art, we aim at discussing the reading device in Discourse Analysis when it comes to the analysis of literary texts. This reading device focuses on socio-historical meaning which constitutes a text. In turn, Lacan's discussion proposes that any work of art is structured around a meaningless void. Considering the literary text in its relationship with a meaningless void may contribute to Discourse Analysis. Once one is based on Lacan's discussion about art, it is possible to identify social-historical meaning not only in relation to the antagonist power relationships which constitute a society, but also as an attempt to deal with a real element which resists symbolization.
