Abstract

In a syntactic-semantic view of the sentence based on the argument structure, this article proposes to present a description, in a functionalist perspective, of the syntactic properties and the semantic roles of the subject evidenced in constructions written by student residents of the municipality of Estrela of Alagoas on the subject of the parallel toponymy. As for the methods used, in addition to bibliographical studies, the field research was used for the generation of data through a semi-structured interview and the analyzes were restricted to the syntactic characteristics of the subject and to the thematic cases expressed by the respondents. As a theoretical basis, we used the basal authors Ignácio (2002), Castilho (2010), Neves (1997, 2002, 2011) and Costa (2014). The results showed that, from a syntactic point of view, the subject can be completed or not and presented in a position prior to the verb, being expressed by pronouns or by a noun phrase, and also in an elided manner. Already from the semantic point of view, the subject function expressed the thematic roles of agent, beneficiary, experimenter, causative, origin and objective as arguments of dynamic and non-dynamic verbs
