Abstract

The tale “Longe dos olhos...” (far from the eyes...), by Machado de Assis, could be taken as a story with romantic characteristics, therefore it tells a love history, but it is a critic to the stamental culture and the patriarchal culture, which is revealed by the narrator speech that express value judgments on the sociocultural context as well as on the characters. T aking it as a base, this work intends to analyze the narrator and the characters speech using the bakhtinian theory about the speech and the historical and social voices. It will also contribute for this analysis the writings made by Raimundo Faoro concerning the
stament in the work of Machado de Assis and the Gilberto Freyre studies about the Brazilian patriarchal family.
