Abstract

In this article we will study the importance of poetry for the Nicaraguan writer Gioconda Belli. Although her best known and award-winning work today is written in prose, the author never turned away from poetry and refers to it as her birthplace and essence. The poetic tradition of her native country joins the strength of Ruben Dario as a great founder and of Ernesto Cardenal as a political, literary, and emotional reference. Throughout Ms. Belli’s work, poetry has fulfilled multiple functions, behaving at the same time as a reporting tool, a construction of memory, an autobiographical element, and as a careful and complex means of aesthetic establishment. The elements announced in her first poetic work can be found throughout her prose and poetry today.
