LAS VANGUARDIAS EN MÉXICO: EL ESTRIDENTISMO Y MANUEL MAPLES ARCE

Abstract

The movements of the Latin American avant-garde may have drawn from European models, but they no doubt presented on their behalf certain particularities related to the socio-historico-political climate of the early Twentieth Century. One of the most important movements of this revolutionary period is Stridentism, founded and cultivated by a group of young Mexicans anxious to subvert tradition. Their works respond to cultural, artistic and ideological circumstances. Thus, Stridentists established themselves as an artistic group whose main purpose was to renovate artistic expression. This movement was born into the aftermath of the Mexican Revolution and influenced greatly by the effects of modernization. One of the emblematic figures of Stridentism, Manuel Maples Arce produced a textual corpus which is examined herein.
