Abstract

The purpose of this paper is, firstly, to present the history of education of the deaf, punctuating the forms of treatment they received in school attendance during the course of education of the deaf in Brazil, with emphasis the oral, total communication and bilingual. Secondly, the aim is to introduce the concept of sign language, highlighting the role of teacher and interpreter of ASL (or Brazilian Sign Language, Libras) in the educational process. This work, bibliographical, allowed a greater knowledge and understanding of the topic deafness and a reflection on the learning of deaf students.
