Abstract

Pierre Duhem approaches, in The Aim and Structure of Physical Theory (1906), the formulation and implications of a theory based on experience. In this context, Duhem revisits Claude Bernard’s conception of experimental physiology. When describing Bernard’s experimental process, Duhem notes that it is “difficult to practice” but considers the logical analysis of this experimentation “very simple”. Although he highlights these aspects of his compatriot’s thesis, he does not present a significantly different proposal. Thus, our approach involves an analysis, through duhemian perspectives, of the experimental methodologies employed; we then aim to identify the reasons behind the development of physiology in Bernard and examine to what extent this approach aligns with that of Duhem.
