Abstract

Abstract: mangroves became better known to Europeans from the 15th century onwards with maritime expansion. As a worldwide intertropical ecosystem, it was known and sustainably exploited by native peoples. Europeans saw it as an infectious and unproductive environment, like swamps. Gradually, the importance for subsistence and market economies was being recognized. Today, science demonstrates its importance as a carbon dioxide sink.
