Abstract

Socioeconomic vulnerability and relief in Rondonópolis/MT

Abstract

Production of space and socioeconomic vulnerability are closely linked in capitalist society. Once space is commodified, acquiring the best spatial conditions for living comes at a cost. Within these conditions are spaces with varying degrees of risks (such as flooding, erosion, mass movements, etc.). In this study, the objective was to analyze different levels of socioeconomic vulnerability and the terrain slopes in Rondonópolis-MT. For this purpose, a map of socioeconomic vulnerability was created based on urban census data, incorporating social, economic, urban, and residential infrastructure and educational variables from the 2010 IBGE demographic census. Additionally, a slope map was generated using Landsat orbital imagery (USGS Earth Explorer). In a GIS environment, the two maps were overlaid, revealing noteworthy results: 75.94% of highly vulnerable census tracts, with a population density of 816.2 inhabitants/Km², are located in low slopes (0 to 7%), and 0.51% of the very highly vulnerable, with a population density of 3,405.11 inhabitants/Km², are situated in high slopes (30.01 to 100%). The central discussion arising from the data suggests that, although residing in low-slope areas may seem risk-free, in reality, a portion of them in the study area is susceptible to floods and underlying material disturbances. Thus, there is a production of space that carries with it a production of risks and socioeconomic and environmental vulnerabilities.
