Abstract

Canada, besides being a "megaminer" country, stands out as the headquarters of numerous major and junior companies. Additionally, it is also home to the world's primary stock exchange linked to the mineral sector. Despite being registered in Canada, these companies do not necessarily have mining projects in the country, operating mainly elsewhere, with Brazil being one of the main destinations for these corporations, alongside other Latin American countries. Although many of them are listed on stock exchanges, their subsidiaries in other countries are not always evident. Considering this topic is still underexplored in the national literature, the aim of this study is to identify and characterize mining companies registered in Canada that operate in Brazil and how they are spatially organized within the national territory. To achieve this, we collate quantitative and qualitative data from various sources, such as mining processes, financial reports of the researched companies, stock exchanges, and news. Among the 31 Canadian mining companies operating in Brazil, either directly or indirectly through their subsidiaries, 21 are defined as junior companies, a type of smaller-sized and essentially financialized company, primarily focused on gold ore projects and in the exploration phase, in mineral frontier regions and specially protected territories.
