Physical growth and living environment: positive and negative influences

This study aimed to analyze the positive or negative influences of environmental characteristics and variables on the physical growth of schoolchildren aged 7 to 14 from Marechal Cândido Rondon - PR. More specifically, it analyzed the behavior of the anthropometric variables height and body weight. The sample comprised 1,185 schoolchildren of both sexes, enrolled in public schools in the municipality. Data collection instruments included a scale and a stadiometer (for weight and height, respectively), as well as a questionnaire with closed questions to assess environmental variables (socioeconomic and cultural). The results may indicate the influence of environmental variables on the growth indices of the children. Although below-normal weight and height indices were found, it is noteworthy that normal and above-normal indices prevail. Thus, it is concluded that the physical growth of the investigated schoolchildren generally demonstrates conditions similar to normality when compared to the reference standard. Furthermore, a strong relationship between living conditions and growth indices was observed through the differences in the schoolchildren's body dimensions when considering some characteristics of the development context. This highlights the need for investigations of this nature to consider the influence of the environment, which may be affecting children's growth indices.
