Abstract

This paper shows that the discourses about the origins of the charango — the fivestringed chordophon from the Andes— , are related to nationalist positions in Bolivia andPeru. From a narrative perspective for the writing of history one analyzes how in the middleof the 20th Century a position of revalorization of the Andean culture inside the musicologyand the Folklore Studies became more and more radical, causing historical texts whichexplain the history of the charango in relation to a pedagogical narration of the nation withnationalistic and exclusionary implications.
