Abstract

The article discusses the  development of Brazilian school encyclopedic dictionary focusing on place names in the light of interdisciplinary theories of linguistics: Toponymy and the Metalexicography, proposing the insertion of toponymic signs in these reference works on the grounds that these lexical units not are rare records of the use of language, both oral and written mode, but instead are common and frequent words, and more, are not only used with the identifying function as spatial reference elements,but above all as pragmatic element and discourse of social organization and spatial.
