Abstract

This essay aims to undertake an analysis of the poem “O elefante” (The elephant), written by Carlos Drummond de Andrade and published in his book “A rosa do povo” (The people’s rose – 1945). The theoretical contributions used in this paper are based on the assumptions of the Hungarian philosopher György Lukács (1885 – 1971). Thereby, we’ll analyze how to succeed the process of fetishization and unfetishization from the aesthetic objects. Therefore, taking into account the idea of a commodified society, the art has an important disalienating role, task and function; as well as it is able to transform and make the man free. This possible bias lead us to the reading of the poem “O elefante”, because, in this text, the human values are tested and it is performed a new vision of the life, a unfetishization of the values and of the commodified behaviors.
