Abstract

In this paper we present brief notes about the translation of the article Descrizione d’una nuova orchidea brasiliana del Sig. Giuseppe Raddi. Ricevuta addì 19. Luglio 1822 (Description of a new Brazilian orchid, by Mr. Giuseppe Raddi and received on July 19, 1822), from the Italian language to Portuguese. Giuseppe Raddi is considered the greatest Italian naturalist to collect and classify specimens from the mountains and forests that surround Rio de Janeiro in the nineteenth century. The author left a valuable testimony, describing both the material collected as customs and culture of the population of the time. The material collected and described by Raddi currently is found at the Botanical Museum of Florence and at the department of botanical science Pisa, Italy. For the translation of the technical part of  Giuseppe Raddi's text, we are supported by Hurtado's guidelines (2001). We also propose in our translation to transpose cultural values, following Peter Burke's notes (2010), since Raddi, besides collecting and describing plants, also describes habits and makes comments about Brazilian culture of the time.
