The systemic and the non-systemic: A reflection on Brazilian literary historiography
Keywords:
Brazilian Literature, Literary Historiography, Literary System, Non-Systemic WritersAbstract
This essay proposes an understanding about the relation between literature and culture in Brazil from the literary historiography, precisely taking into account the notion of "literary system" defended by Antonio Candido. He argues that if there are systemic authors, which can be organized within the author-work-reader scheme, there are also those non-systemic authors, of whom Cruz e Sousa is the great example. The non-systemic authors writes "against" the system, they are not limited to the conventions of the system, and are revealing of a conflicting social experience, of a cultural malaise that differentiates them from "normal" writers.
