The history of school institutions is a field of investigation that has expanded in recent decades, especially with regard to cultural aspects, the interior of the school, the ways of doing and the meanings attributed by the school community. The objective was to understand how schooling developed at José de Anchieta municipal school, located in São João do Deserto, Lomba Grande, Novo Hamburgo. In addition, the various facets passed in the trajectory of a school, what processes it went through, how schooling developed were some of the questions that we seek to answer with this research. The theoretical perspective for analyzing the memories and documents around the José de Anchieta school is based on cultural history. The writing of history is here understood as a practice whose subjects narratives and documents also contribute to know and understand the trajectory of a school institution and the context in which it is inserted. As a methodology we use documentary research and conducting oral history interviews. As results, we identified, through memories of students interviewed, some methodologies of teaching practice, from the perspective of the History of Education.
