This work shows a critical reading on the contents of a film which portrays
racial prejudice. it aims to answer the following question: how can films, when portrayingsocial conflicts coming from racial laws, contribute to train better prepared and more
capable teachers in dealing with racism and prejudice in the classroom? Then, the film
“sarafina o som da liberdade” has been chosen as a research source with the purpose of
analyzing the cultural, economic, social and political aspects in Africa. Thus, an analysis
methodology has been suggested built upon the cultural studies’ scholars. The use of this
film in the classroom, in that perspective, may open our comprehension to the logic of
domination through racial segregation, and also, contribute to provide actions concerning
the valorization and the recognition of the African and African-descendant histories and
cultures.
