THE BRAZILIAN CULTURE IN THE FRENCH IMAGINATION SINCE
Keywords:
Cultura brasileira, Identidade, Diplomacia, Raça, Imaginário francês.Abstract
This article discusses the image of the Brazilian culture in France, in the
middle of nineteen century and the beginning of the twenty, and the role of the diplomats,
Brazilian and French travelers and writers that had contributed, favorably or not, for our
representation abroad. It were much attempts of the Brazilians to create a positive image of
the nation that, in the end of nineteen century, was seen as a retrograde and depraved
country for the mestizo. The text gives emphasis to the duality that always was present in
the formation of the national character: the search of the identity and the bond with the
French model of civilization and culture.
