This assay shows as the small occured social modifications up to 1911 are represented through literature in the romance a esfinge of afrânio peixoto, bestseller of the time. we want, with of this, to strict show the importance of the romance, forgotten for the history of brazilian literature, that is one of the first ones to inside comment and to put in the central solution of the plot the possibility a second marriage, inside of Brazil, through the methodist church, in the brazilian society until then catholic. End also one of the first ones to show the direct relation of the work with the sustenance attainment, unusual relation in brazilian literature. through a artist personage deriving of the agricultural oligarchy that perceives suddenly the paternal legacy to finish and if thus sees obliged to work to support a woman who is his great passion, but that she has habits of the elite as well as his, the book advances a little of what it will be the society after the great wars, when the american way of life will take account of brazil modifying our way to act and to think as society, therefore the artistic sensitivity is notable that foresees the social modifications the one that we will be submitted years later, as the greater freedom in the sentimental area and greater restrictions in the area of the work.
