This article discusses the characteristic of hollow eyes in the grimaces of Ana das Carrancas, a Brazilian popular artist, drawing connections with the work of Amedeo Modigliani, an Italian painter and sculptor. The research begins by analyzing the artists' expressive forms, focusing on the symbolism of hollow eyes, which transcend aesthetics and express profound emotional and cultural meanings. While Ana das Carrancas used this characteristic as a tribute to her visually impaired husband, giving melancholy and introspection to her sculptures, Modigliani explored the emptiness of the eyes in his paintings to create an atmosphere of mystery and invite the viewer to introspective reflection. The methodology used is qualitative, with a bibliographic review, based on researchers such as Aquino and Epiphanio (2022), Freitas and Sousa (2017; 2019) and Machado (2008). Although the contexts of the artists are different, both use the emptiness of the eyes as a form of artistic expression, revealing the complexity of the human soul. The article also reinforces the relevance of Ana das Carrancas to Brazilian popular art and its cultural legacy.
