Abstract

This paper analyzes the novel The Snack Wharf, written by Lídia Jorge, a Portuguese writer. The discussions aim at revealing the way the author’s narrative discourse addresses the themes of nation and Portuguese identity, which are (de)constructed for us through a game involving remembrance and forgetfulness. In other words, the writer challenges the concepts of stability and singularity by questioning and deconstructing the idea of a homogeneous identity for the Portuguese people, while presenting a nation and identities crushed by acculturation. On the other hand, she opens up a possibility and envisages hope despite the accusations present in her narrative.
