FEAR, ENVY, SHAME: PASSION IN THE TALE LA FORMA DE LA ESPADA, BY JORGE LUIS BORGES
Keywords:
paixões, narrativa, medo, inveja, vergonha.Abstract
This paper comes up as a result of studies and argumentation done during the classes of the subject Oral and Written Speeches: imaginary, myths and passion, and the search for analyzing passion in the story La forma de la espada, by Jorge Luis Borges. Aiming that, we first approach Greimas’ Semiotics Theory, in some of its fundamental aspects, which are essential in certain analysis of this text. Then, we reproduce Borges’ story and, as passions arise in the text, we analyze each one of them. However, it is more related to general thoughts raised by the story than to a semiotics analysis according to Greimas’ standard, and its technical terms. Though sometimes it is difficult and even controversial to identify passion in it, we advocate that in the story La forma de la espada, fear, shame, and envy are linked. We also study the meaning of the name of the main character in its relation to the story.Downloads
