EMOTION AND RHYTHM: MUSICAL HERITAGES PRESENTS IN THE LYRIC GENRE
Abstract
The lyric genre, according to Salvatore D’Onofrio (2005), is directly connected to music and singing in their origin. Such relationship can be proposed since the etymon of the word “lyric”, derived from lira, a stringed musical instrument used by the Greeks to accompany the poetic verses. Scholars also point out that rhythm and emotionality are two elements which belong both to the lyrical and musical production. Thus, this work aims to clarify the emotional and rhythmic events through a bibliographic research by using the fundamentals of music and literature theory. Therefore, we will analyze the rhythmic structure of metrically regular poems in order to observe the appropriateness of several poematic forms and explore their emotionality. It is known that in the Ancient history and Middle Ages, poetry and music would perform simultaneously; only after being extricated from music, poetry became emancipated. This way, poetry was then written and recited, although keeping the musical traits due to the presence of various phonic elements. More important than relating these arts is to know the origin of such relations and observe changes over time, such as style, structure and sound and metric resources.
