THE PLACE OF THE FOREIGNER IN A DISTANT SHORE: A READING PROPOSAL

Endorsing Silva´s contention that the production of identity and difference is a social and educational problem (2000), this analysis proposes the study of literature as a forum for a debate on a philosophy of difference that really celebrates the multiple and the novel. Taking Caryl Phillips´s novel A Distant Shore as a provocation for this discussion, this study initially describes the relational and classificatory mechanisms involved in the attribution of identity and of the outsider status, and proceeds to propose a critical reading of the novel that in effect may take in consideration mechanisms that produce difference, and interrogate them.Downloads
